Welcomes
Cornell Law School External Education
For a social wine-focused virtual happy hour. Connect, network, and discover alongside your fellow classmates…
Sheldrake Point Winery is about 30 minutes north of Cornell University on the west side of Cayuga Lake
Join us for a ‘Wine 101’ educational session, hosted by Cornellian and winetrepreneur Richy Petrina, for a casual but informative chat about wine. We will cover the basics of tasting wine, introduce some of the key varietals, and recommend easy food & wine pairing ideas. Additionally, we will introduce you to the Finger Lakes wine region that comprises over 150 wineries within an hour’s drive of Cornell University.
This will NOT be a ‘geeky’ tasting. Novices and wine-lovers alike are welcome. In fact, you don’t even need wine to participate! But if you’d like to open a bottle (or two), we invite you to choose either the same wines we will be tasting (made in the Finger Lakes), or something similar. More info below…
Step 1: Save the date / RSVP
Join us at one of the times most convenient for you… 5pm Eastern Standard Time… or 5pm Pacific Standard Time:
Step 2: Purchase some wine (if you wish)
We selected Sheldrake Point, a Cornellian-owned winery on Cayuga lake, to feature their wines as the basis of our conversation. If you’d like to purchase their 2-bottle ‘at home tasting pack’, you can do so by ordering it below. The Chardonnay and Merlot 2-pack cost $30, and shipping and taxes will add an additional $20-$25 depending on where it is being shipped to.
Perhaps you may already have some similar wines at home… or you would like to purchase wines from a local wine store close to you, here’s what we recommend:
For the Chardonnay: you may ask for ‘a cool climate Chardonnay that sees slight oak aging’. Look for this varietal from Chablis (in France), New Zealand, and Oregon. Try and avoid the ‘bigger’ styles from Napa and Sonoma, for example, but if you already have a bottle on hand… don’t worry!
For the Merlot: you may ask for ‘a cool climate Merlot'… from regions such as Chile, Northern Italy, or - the reference - the Right Bank of Bordeaux. Warmer-climate Merlot from regions such as Napa or Australia will be much 'bigger’, but see what you can find in your local store!
Step 3: Join us!
Open a bottle, pour a taste, and join your classmates on Wednesday, March 30th! Cheers!
