Spring Wine Tasting!

Today’s only two rules:

1) enjoy, and… 2) ask a question anytime you wish

Run of show…

Quick intro about your host (me): Richy Petrina

We will discuss: wine tasting basics, key varietals & styles, the Finger Lakes, a focus on Chardonnay & Merlot, pairing food + wine, & helpful tips

Many of the wine images are from Wine Folly (excellent book)

Wine tasting basics

There’s a lot. Let’s only focus on:

  • Look

    Color, Hue and Intensity, Tears/Legs

  • Smell

    Intensity, Fruit, Herb/Other, Oak, Earth

  • Taste

Sweetness, Tannin, Acidity, Alcohol, Overall Body, Additional Flavors

  • Glassware

    Keep it simple!

Key varietals & styles

The two Sheldrake wines represent a ‘full bodied white’ and a ‘medium bodied red’… regardless, let’s all pour something (anything)!

The Finger Lakes

Easy food & wine pairings

Helpful tips

Don’t drink red wines too warm or white wines too cold… [the 15 min rule]

Don’t overthink which glass to use… [bubbles don’t need flutes]

Good food + good wine = the best pairing… [don’t overthink]

If hosting a dinner, use the wine as a conversation piece [winemaker, region, story, etc]

When you visit Ithaca, be sure and visit some of the ‘FLX’ wineries!
